Q: What if my house is too messy/small/dark to do a photo shoot?
You don’t have a have a session in your home. However, remember that you are hiring a professional who has been trained to find the light and see the moments that make you YOU. Hear me on this one: the size of your home and how clean it is has nothing to do with how the photos turn out. It’s all about the connection and documenting the relationship.
Q: What if I don’t like photos of myself ?
Listen, if anyone understand this, it’s ME (note: I would rather stab my eyeballs than be in front of the camera). This will not be like your typical portrait session where you are very much aware of the camera and forcing a smile. My documentary-style approach of capturing your family makes it easy. All you have to do is be yourself and carry on as you typically would with your family.
Q: What if my kids are kinda crazy? Like, they fight and yell sometimes.
Guess what? So are mine. 😉 They’re crazy and chaotic and full of energy. And it’s okay. In my former life as a pediatric nurse, I learned how to relate to families and help them feel comfortable in different situations. However our time together goes, it’s alllll good. Promise.
Q: We don’t do anything fun and cute like I’ve seen on your web site. What would be “good enough” to document?
My job is to make the experience feel like we are hanging out together and that the camera is almost an afterthought. Once we chat initially, I think we’ll both have a good idea about what you value and love most about your life. We’ll document that. Easy peasy. But if we need some other ideas? I have plenty! Here are just a few things I like to document families doing:
Making pancakes (pizza, cupcakes, cookies, etc), sidewalk chalk, blowing bubbles, riding bikes, hide and seek, naptime/bathtime/lunchtime, working puzzles or playing games, walking the dog and/or riding bikes, and the list goes on. Anything is fair game.
Q: Should we plan to do something special?
Think about it this way. What does your family enjoy doing?
Maybe your little girl loves to have her nails painted or play dress up. Maybe your son loves for you to get on the floor and play cars or trains with him. Maybe you love to curl up on the couch and read books or breastfeed your baby and snuggle. Anything is fair game.
If we let the day unfold, with little to no expectations, it’s like magic. All you have to do is relax, enjoy, love on your family, and let me capture all of that.
Q: Do we have to pose? How do we act?
My documentary-style approach of capturing your family means no posing is necessary. All you have to do is be yourself and carry on as you typically would with your family.
Q: How long is our session?
Every session is different, but on average, sessions last about 2 hours. Those 2 hours fly by!
Q: What should we wear?
Please don’t go out and buy new outfits for everyone. It’s not that kind of session. Be yourself and be comfortable. And mama? My best advice is for you to pick your outfit first, and let everyone else’s fall into place. If you get stuck, I’m happy to help!
Q: Shouldn’t I lose those extra 15 pounds first?
Do your kids care about your extra weight? THEY DON’T. I promise. They care about the way you hold them on your lap, the way you smile at them, the way you show them every day how much you love them. Take my word for it. Don’t wait.
Q: Do we have to clean our house?
No cleaning necessary (isn’t that kinda awesome?)! Think of it like friends are coming to visit: tidy up like you would for them. That’s it.
Q: What if I have to cancel?
Your session retainer serves as a non-refundable fee. If you cancel more than 7 days before your session, the retainer may be transferred to a session at a future date. However, if you cancel less than 7 days before your session, I reserve the right to retain the amount in full.
Sounds fantastic, doesn’t it? IT IS.
